Collection: Marthe Romme

A French illustrator and artist who worked mainly in Paris in the early 20th century. Her works are a wonderful display of the pochoir technique - hand coloring through stencils, widely used in illustration during that period. Romme’s style combines decorative elegance and poster aesthetics characteristic of the transition between Art Nouveau and early Art Deco. The French Revolution gave the months new names: Pluviôse for rain, Thermidor for heat, Fructidor for fruit. A century later Marthe Romme drew twelve women, one for each of them, in costume taken from the fashion of 1792 to 1806. Blue, white and red, with silver along the contours.
