Pluviôse, the month of rains (1919)

In Pluviôse, Marthe Romme draws a woman caught by a sudden icy downpour in the middle of the street. Surprise is written across her face. She is just reaching to open the umbrella she had the sense to bring, its striped panels not yet fully spread. The rain is rendered graphically, as long diagonal lines that fill the whole image and turn into pattern where they cross her striking cobalt blue coat. Above her, to the right, runs a handwritten line: "jamais pluie dans le printemps ne passa pour un mauvais temps" ("Spring rain is never bad weather").

Pluviôse sits at the middle of the winter cycle, while the proverb speaks of spring: Marthe Romme borrows the good cheer of another season and hands it to the winter rain. The illustration comes from the series Les Douze Mois de l'Année (The Twelve Months of the Year) of 1919, where the character of each month of the Republican calendar takes the form of a female figure. A French illustrator and artist who worked mainly in Paris in the early 20th century. Her works are a wonderful display of the pochoir technique - hand coloring through stencils, widely used in illustration during that period. Romme’s style combines decorative elegance and poster aesthetics characteristic of the transition between Art Nouveau and early Art Deco.
