Nivôse, the month of snow (1919)

"Snowflakes are the butterflies of the season", reads the handwritten line in the upper corner. The illustration gives exactly that image: snowflakes drift through the air and settle on the lavish red flowers of the long coat. The hem, edged in white fur, curves in a wave around the figure. The ribbons of her bonnet end in white fur pompoms, floating weightless in the snowy scene. Her face, tucked into the fur collar, is turned towards us. The flat pale grey background is filled with falling snow.

The illustration comes from the series Les Douze Mois de l'Année (The Twelve Months of the Year) of 1919, where the mood and character of each month of the Republican calendar take the form of a female figure. Nivôse begins at the winter solstice and opens the winter cycle. In the depth of winter, Marthe Romme dresses the woman in a lavish flowered coat and scatters light, airy snowflakes over her. A French illustrator and artist who worked mainly in Paris in the early 20th century. Her works are a wonderful display of the pochoir technique - hand coloring through stencils, widely used in illustration during that period. Romme’s style combines decorative elegance and poster aesthetics characteristic of the transition between Art Nouveau and early Art Deco.
